It’s not 1984
Phrases like “biometric”, “geolocating” and “facial recognition” can bring up images of 1984 (Big Brother is watching) which tend to frighten people; and in the current climate much of the public can be distrusting of anything which encroaches on their perceived privacy and personal data.
This is a common misconception among the public, but this technology is not something of which to be wary, it should be embraced. Using technology to ensure that your transaction is safe and secure is in everyone’s best interest – you know you are receiving the correct information and the client is assured their data is safe and secure.
How does it work?
Facial Identity and ‘liveness’ recognition technology works by comparing biometric data obtained from a valid government photo Identity document to that of the subject’s face and other data and algorithms, in real-time.
As part of the ‘liveness’ comparison process, the AI (Artificial Intelligence) and FRS (Facial Recognition Software) detects and confirms if the image of the subject is in fact, that of a real person and not just a photographic image or an image of another subject.
The FRS allows the subject to upload a current photo identity document, such as a driver’s licence or passport. This can be done via a PC or a snapshot from their mobile device for data extraction purposes; the software then requests the subject to look at the device camera in order to carry out the “live” face match process.
During the entire process, both the AI the FRS monitor the subject’s device, their actions and movements and deploys both anti-tamper & anti-spoofing technology in order to reduce the risk of fraud, keeping the entire process safe and secure.
Where can it be used?
Real-time face identity has many uses, particularly in today’s remote working environment. We are seeing uptake across a range of sectors including recruitment, where they use it for contracts and right to work checks; banking, where they use it for ID verification when opening bank accounts. We are also seeing it deployed for accountants, estate agents, vehicle purchasing and leasing in a KYC (Know Your Customer) capacity.
Other areas in which it can be used include:
- Local service registrations: GP/library/local authority portals/gym membership
- Benefits processing & affordable housing scheme applications
- Solicitors due diligence
- Colleges & universities
- Mobile phone purchasing
What are the benefits?
There are many benefits to using real-time face identity and liveness technology, we believe that it is here to stay and will benefit businesses and their customers for years to come. It can be used anywhere in the world, no more unnecessary trips to an office to authorise a document.
Many of the processes can be automated and with anti-tamper and anti-spoofing guarantee you know your data is safe and accurate. This means you can identify & verify in minutes which will speed up your business’ onboarding processes and make each interaction more efficient and cost-effective.
As well as being able to integrate with other Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) database checks it is entirely GDPR and HMRC IDV compliant reducing risk to your business and your clients.
